Building Green

There's a lot of talk about Green Building and what is considered green. In an attempt to clarify Green Building , we have gathered the following information and links for your information and reference.

The US Green Building Council has the LEED program. What is LEED®? The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings' performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

The National Association of Home Builders published the Model Green Home Building Guidelines (free download). This is a great guide for building green. You may be surprised to learn how much of the LEED for Homes & Model Green Home Building Guidelines are standard with Berkshire Green Builders.

We have attempted to explain some of the many green building options that are available today. These include alternate or renewable energy, sustainable eco-friendly materials and products, energy efficient and ENERGY STAR products, and building practices products or technologies that support the pursuit of Green Building . We are pleased to show you some of the many benefits of building green.

We feel that every step taken by an individual, family or business toward building and living "green" is a worthy one.

"Green Building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use and harvest energy, water and materials."

Building Green

The International Code Council is now incorporating green building into the next code revision. Read more about Code Council policy supports building green.

And then there is ENERGY STAR. You can find efficient building products, ENERGY STAR Partner builders (yes we are) and much more.

If you're ready to talk or build green, so are we. Let's discuss your project and see what products and technologies are appropriate for you. Let's build green - for the right reasons!

The Sustainable Building Industry Council has released the Fifth Edition of SBIC's Green Building Guidelines©. For the first time, the book includes NAHB's Model Green Home Building Guidelines. The new Fifth Edition also features a USGBC LEED for Homes rating system checklist , a discussion of the Whole Building Approach, and expanded acoustics coverage.

One important note: We will not redesign your building or home. Our goal is to incorporate as many Green options as possible, within the constraints of your design and budget.

"It is concerned with reducing building impacts on human health and the environment through better sighting, design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal - encompassing the entire building life cycle."
